Artist Samarjit Roy Chowdhury passed away

Famous painter Samarjit Roy Chowdhury passed away to the land of no return. He breathed his last at a private hospital in the capital on Sunday (October 9) at 2:40 p.m.

His son Surjit Roy Chowdhury confirmed the death of this famous painter to the media.

He said that his father’s condition deteriorated in the last three days. The fever was not going down at all. He was in the hospital since September 5. After a week he was taken home. On September 15, when his physical condition deteriorated, he was again admitted to the hospital that day. He breathed his last there today.

Samarjit Roy completed his graduation in graphic design from the then Government Art Institute (now Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University) in 1960. In 1960, he joined the Fine Arts Faculty of Dhaka University and retired as a professor in 2003 after 43 years of service there. He later served as Dean of Fine and Performing Arts Department at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology till 2010. He then joined Dhaka University as a supernumerary professor.

Samarjit Roy Chowdhury (born 1937) is a Bangladeshi painter. Although he earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, Sukumar practiced creative art from the beginning and was involved in experimental art practice. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in 2014 for his contribution to painting.
