Mughal E Azam The Musical: After two years, the classic story returned to the stage, ‘Mughal-e-Azam the Musical’ staged from this date

K Asif’s musical masterpiece ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ is one such film that continues to create buzz even after 62 years of its release. When cinema used to be a part of the culture, the name of this film is written in golden letters in the cinema of that era. And, watching this story happen on stage is a different experience in itself. Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical, directed by Firoz Abbas Khan, is a brilliant stage adaptation of the classical cult. In the span of more than six years, this classic musical has traveled the world and won the hearts of fans. Now after a hiatus of two difficult years after the Corona pandemic, the soap opera is once again making a comeback on the Mumbai stage in its 18th season.

Regarding the return of ‘Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical’ on the stage, director Firoz Abbas Khan says, “During these two years of the pandemic, our country and its people have gone through a very difficult phase. But, the worst is now behind us. And finally we can all come together once again to celebrate music, accompaniment and never-ending magical tales. I think the return of ‘Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical’ to Mumbai This is the right time to start our 18th season.”

Dipesh Salgia, who was creatively associated with this stage performance from the beginning, says, “Shapoorji Pallonji had collaborated with K Asif in the 1950s in the making of the film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’. And now the same group is with Firoz Abbas Khan. The musical is getting better with each season and each time more layers of grandeur and suspense are built around the soul of a classic love story. There is so much in this musical of the 18th season. The audience has not seen before. I am glad that a new journey of the show is about to begin from its birthplace Mumbai in the post-pandemic era.”

Noted designer Manish Malhotra has designed the royal costume for ‘Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical’. The costumes in this musical are the most expensive of any stage performance ever. The music of ‘Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical’ is not complete without dance and choreographer Mayuri Upadhyay has created a different atmosphere with his artists in live dances on its songs. In its journey so far, ‘Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical’ has won many accolades. Firoz Abbas Khan, Manish Malhotra, Mayuri Upadhyay, Neil Patel and David Lander also won awards in their respective categories along with the award for Best Indian Play at the Broadway World India Awards 2017. The play also won the award for Best Ensemble Cast.

‘Mughal-e-Azam: The Musical’ will be held this Diwali weekend from 21st to 30th October 2022 at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, Bandra West, Mumbai. In this season, 14 shows will be done in Mumbai.
