Famous sarod player Amjad Ali Khan is celebrating his 77th birthday today. Amjad Ali is active in sarod playing since the year 1960. He inherited talent in the field of music. Let us tell you that Amjad Ali Khan was born in Gwalior in the sixth generation of the ‘Seniya Bangash’ family of music. His father Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan was a distinguished musician in the Gwalior royal court. Therefore, Amjad Ali Khan also got an atmosphere of music since childhood. Amjad Ali Khan was born on 9 October 1945 in Gwalior. He made his first public performance of solo sarod playing at the age of just 12. The legendary musician was stunned to hear the unique rhythm and tantrakari on the sarod of a small boy. Amjad was a disciple of his father, who acquired technical proficiency in the traditional way of playing the Seniya gharana sarod. Not finding enough of these wide repertoire in India and abroad, Amjad Ali composed vocal and instrumental music to transform classical music.

Amjad Ali Khan married Bharatnatyam dancer Shubhalakshmi. Amjad Ali Khan and Shubhalakshmi’s marriage was very much discussed and their story has been very interesting. It is said that Amjad Ali Khan was first seen by Shubhalakshmi performing stage performance at Kala Sangam program in Kolkata in 1974. After the program, both of them met at a common friend’s house. After that their talk went ahead and after a long wait for marriage, they got married in the year 1976. He has two sons.

According to reports, Amjad Ali Khan visited America for the first time in the year 1963. Then he was only 18 years old. Along with the performance of Pandit Birju Maharaj’s dance troupe, Amjad Ali Khan also played sarod. Amjad Ali Khan has been honored with Rostam Award, UNESCO Award, Kala Ratna Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Tansen Samman for his incomparable contribution in the field of music.
